Trivia

Friends

  • Other titles considered for the show were "Friends Like Us," "Friends Like These," "Six of One," and "Across the Hall." None of which beat the title Friends!!
  • For every episode they take about 150 Polaroids for continuity.
  • The Central Perk logo on the window faces the same way whether you are standing inside or out.
  • Matthew Perry is so well know for his one liners that some of them have been written into the show.
  • In the one where Phoebe's doll house burns down the prop handler had to make 7 of them in case they didn't get it the first try.
  • By the end of the series, each of the cast members were making 1 million dollars per episode.
  • The last episode of Friends aired on May 6, 2004 but was shot in January.
  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records in 2003, the three female cast members became the highest paid actresses for their $1 million a week paycheck on Friends.
  • The Magna-doodle on the door in the boys apartment has a different picture on it every episode. There is usually some tenuous connection between the picture and the plot of the episode.
  • Matthew Perry's wit is so legendary that the scriptwriters have often incorporated his gags into the show.
  • Jennifer Aniston's actual last name is Anastassakis but her family changed it to Aniston when they moved to the United States. If you watch TOW Chandler and Monica's Wedding, Jennifer's actual last name is used for the Greek couple having their wedding in the episode.
  • In the series 8 episode where Joey tells Rachel he loves her, the gay waiter in the restaurant is the same as the one in the series 9 episode with Phoebe and Joey's 'evil' plan. His name is Sam Pancake and he has worked in two Friends restaurants.
  • All the friends have a lot of expensive things in their apartments, but you have only seen them lock their doors four times.
  • The gold frame around the peephole in Monica and Chandler's apartment was originally the frame of a mirror, but was broken before filming began, and it was decided it should be kept anyway.
  • The artwork on the wall behind the couch in the coffee house changes every 3 episodes.
  • In Friends, Joey is an actor on Days of our Lives, a program on which Jennifer Aniston's dad, John Aniston, plays Victor Kiriakis.
  • Matthew Perry was so famous for missing his mark while taping that he developed the backward slide that you see him do in almost every show. He would come bounding into his scene slide backwards looking down for his mark and then hit it.
  • There is only one season where Janice never appears even once: the sixth (she does, however, make a pseudo-appearance when her voice pervades the mixed tape Chandler finds for Monica in the episode where they "make" each other Valentine's Day gifts).
  • The spare room (Rachel's) in Monica's apartment has a wall right opposite the door, which serves absolutely no purpose except to block the view into the room from the living room. The bedroom set isn't always built, just when needed, so having that wall makes life much easier. It's completely illogical though, as it's too thin to be a supporting wall, and where it is makes getting into the room a pain.
  • James Michael Tyler was just another extra at first, but since he was the only extra who knew how to use the cappuccino machine he got a bigger part as Gunther.
  • Phoebe's twin sister "Ursula" actually existed before Phoebe, as a character in another U.S. sitcom, "Mad About You." In the first part of "The One With Two Parts," the two characters who come into Central Perk, thinking Phoebe is Ursula, are regular characters from that show.
  • Rachel's sisters are called Jill and Amy. These are the same names as the co-producers of the show.
  • Many famous people are mentioned in the show and some end up guest starring! Two examples of this include Ross's List from Series 3, which includes Winona Ryder, who guest stars as Rachel's friend in Series 7. Also, Joey and Ross mention their favorite movie is Die Hard, and Bruce Willis guest stars in Series 6 as Ross's girlfriends dad.
  • They first put clips into the opening sequence in Episode 3, "TOW the thumb."
  • The actress who plays Carol's nurse/doctor in "TOW The Birth" goes on to play Joey's Agent, Estelle Leonard.
  • In the scene where Ross has just explained to Joey & Chandler that he has to give up Marcel, there is an advert break. Immediately after the break, the shot shows the three guys sitting on the sofa in the coffee house. If you look at the positions that their hands are in, they are mimicking either "See no evil", "Hear no evil" or "Speak no evil".
  • When the fake Monica meets the real Monica in the tap dance class, Monica says she is Dutch. The fake Monica says: "Mag ik deze dans van jou?", which is Dutch for "May I have this dance?".
  • In the "One where Nana Dies Twice" at the end of the episode the cast looks over pictures of Ross and Monica's Nana. One of the pictures is labeled 'Me and the gang at Java Joe's'. Java Joe's was one of the name possibilities for Central Perk during the shows creation stage.
  • The numbers of Monica's and Chandler and Joey's apartments in the pilot episode are 4 and 5. But in later episodes, they are 19 and 20. This is because they switched to a much bigger stage during that time period because 'Friends' was becoming such a big hit.
  • Just a nice little factoid to use down the pub. Marcel was removed after this series because the monkey that played him kept throwing monkey poop at the actors.
  • The director of the "Smelly Cat" music video was credited as A. Chase. This may have been referring to Adam Chase, executive producer for most episodes, and writer of that particular episode, among others.
  • The first day Courteney Cox donned the 'Fat Monica' make-up and costume, Matthew Perry walked right past her without recognizing who she was.
  • In "The One With The Super bowl: Part 2" the gang is down at the movie set of Marcel's film. Joey asks Phoebe to walk with him so he can show off his acting skills to the director. If you look closely you can see that the 'director' and the people surrounding him are the actual producers of Friends - Kevin S. Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane.
  • Rachel says about her mother who thinks about a divorce and wants to be like her daughter: "Well, couldn't she have just copied my haircut?" A little reference to the fact that The Rachel haircut was one of the most copied one in this time (And still is).
  • In "TOW the baby on the bus" in the 2nd season, Phoebe looses her job as a singer at Central Perk. As a protest she sits outside singing for money. Rachel comes out to give Phoebe a cup of coffee. They talk for a while and Phoebe revels that one of her donations for playing Smelly Cat was a condom. A moment later a guy comes running to get back the condom, played by Giovanni Ribisi. He's not meant to be her brother, as her brother says when she meets him that he's never been to the city before - just a random incidence of an actor playing different roles across series.
  • In "The One With Phoebe's Husband" Joey's porn movie was going to be titled *How To Suck Seed In Business*. Cue network interference, leading to various other suggestions. Ultimately, it went untitled.
  • In "TOW All The Football" the two children on the swings in the background are Marta Kaufman, the shows co-creator's, children.
  • In "The One With Ross's Wedding" (part one) there is a brief shot of Chandler and Joey on the top of the double decker bus. The man and the woman seated behind them is Adam Chase and Marta Kaufman, who both work on the show.
  • Joshua - Rachel's boyfriend in a few episodes, was in fact Jennifer Aniston's boyfriend for 3 years.
  • In the one where Rachel wears the nightie to the restaurant, the man playing Joshua's dad is John Bennett Perry, Matthew Perry's real dad.
  • "TOW Rachel's Crush" was the first episode in which Joey uses his trademark line "How...you doin'?"
  • In the episode "TOW the Girl Who Hits Joey", Ross (David Schwimmer) is called "3B" by the other residents of his new building. Schwimmer played Josh '4B' Goldstein on *NYPD Blue*.
  • When Joey's trying to get his picture up in the dry cleaners, the owner claims never to have seen Air Force One. The actor playing the owner is Ilia Volokh, and he actually played one of the terrorists in Air Force One.
  • Matthew Perry and Bruce Willis starred together in the movie "The Whole Nine Yards". While making the movie, Matthew made a bet with Bruce that the movie would open in the top position at the box office. If it did this (which it consequently did) Bruce had to star in an episode of Friends for no fee.
  • In series 10 there's an episode where Phoebe's getting rid of stuff in preparation for Mike moving in, and she dumps two horrendous 3D paintings on Monica and Rachel. I figured they were just created for that show, but in "TOW Phoebe Runs", 4 seasons earlier, before Rachel goes out for her run we can actually see one of them in the background - nice to see a long term plot device being used.
  • In the opening credits of "The One After Vegas," all of the cast member's names have "Arquette" attached to them. This is a reference to Courtney Cox's long awaited marriage to David Arquette.
  • When Rachel is describing her encounter with Winona Ryder's character, she says it was after the Sigma Chi luau. Brad Pitt (her husband at the time) was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity at the University of Missouri.
  • "TOW Joey's Award" is the only episode known to give direct reference to the F-Word. When Joey doesn't get his award he says, "What the f-" but when the F-Word comes, he slams his fist on the table which blocks it out.
  • When Joey and Rachel are looking for name tags to con their way into the convention in "TOW in Barbados (Part One)", the name picked out for Rachel is Kate Miller. I just found it a bit odd that not a flicker of recognition passes across Joey's face, considering that was the name of Dina Meyer's character from season 3 who he was in love with.
  • The extras on the plane and in the coffee house in "TOW The Last One (part one)" are the production crew and friends and family.
  • A bit too unlikely to be just a coincidence, but I can't work out the significance. The doctor who delivers Phoebe's triplets (the one who loves Fonzie) played the evil head of Wolfram and Hart in "Angel". The doctor who delivers Erica's twins in this episode also plays the evil head of Wolfram and Hart in "Angel" (after the death of the first guy).
  • Just a thought: Every time Rachel hears someone talking French, she instantly becomes aroused (even when a woman does it). A few episodes later, she decides to move to Paris. Boy, that would be a hard time for her...
  • In "The One With The Tea Leaves", Monica is organizing her CD cases and mentions Bruce Springsteen. That's a bit wierd of her to say considering Courteney was dancing on stage with him in his "Dancing in the Dark" music video in 1984.
  • Throughout the series, 27 episode titles reference Rachel, 23 reference Ross, 15 reference Joey, 10 reference Chandler, 10 reference Phoebe and 8 reference Monica.
  • On the show, Baby Emma in seasons 9 and 10 is a twin. It's not credited, but their names are Elizabeth and Genevieve Davidson. Click here to see them..___________________________________________________
  • The baby boy who plays liitle Ben from season 2 to season 5 is also a twin. Their names are Charlie and Jack Allen.
  • There are 236 episodes of Friends.
  • The one hundredth episode of Friends is named "The One Hundredth" or "The One With The Triplets".
  • The two hundredth episode of Friends is "The One with the Male Nanny".
  • The only episodes not to begining with "The One..." (in/with/where/that/after) are "The Pilot" and "The Last One". However, they have alternative titles that do.
("The Pilot" --- "The One Where It All Began" or "The One Where Monica Gets A Roomate") ("The Last One" --- "The One Where They Called It a Day" or "The One Where It All Ends")
  • Joey and Chandler's big white dog actually belonged to Jennifer Aniston. She donated it to the show.
  • In "The One With The Flashback" one of Rachel's friends is played my Marissa Ribisi, Giovanni Ribbisi's (Frank Jr.) twin sister.
  • In "The One In Massapequa" Parker, played my Alec Baldwin, says that Massapequa sounds like a 'magical place.' In real life, Alec Baldwin is actually from Massapequa.
  • In "The One With The Morning After" Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer were actually crying when they were filming their break-up scene because it was so emotional.
